WREXHAM SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Ian Balmain – Trumpet

Born in Wrexham in 1963, Ian Balmain began his musical training with John Duckett.

His initial orchestral training was gained with the Wrexham Orchestral Society and County, North Wales and Welsh National Youth Orchestras.

Ian then gained a scholarship to study with David Mason at the Royal College of Music where he won many prizes and awards.

In his second year he was chosen to perform the newly commissioned Malcolm Arnold Trumpet Concerto as part of the R.C.M. centenary celebrations televised live from the Royal Albert Hall.

It was also around this time that he toured extensively worldwide, including China, with the European Community Youth Orchestra.

Ian joined the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in 1985, and is a regular soloist with them, having recorded the Haydn Trumpet Concerto for E.M.I. in 1991.
