WREXHAM SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Matthew Wood – Conductor
In recent years, the Australian
conductor Matthew Wood has emerged as a musician of versatile talents within
orchestral, choral, operatic and new music repertoire.
Currently
residing in Manchester, Matthew was recently awarded the much sought after
position of Junior Fellow in Conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music.
This two-year position commenced in September 2005 and will see Matthew direct
the RNCM Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, the RNCM Opera and RNCM New Ensemble.
During this time, Matthew will also work closely with Maestro Mark Elder CBE
and the Hallé orchestra.
Since his
arrival in the UK, Matthew has worked with many
ensembles including the Hallé Youth Orchestra,
Stockport Symphony, Crosby Symphony, Chester Philharmonic, Wilmslow
Symphony and numerous ensembles at the RNCM.
Matthew has
been awarded numerous conducting prizes and awards both in Australia and overseas. In 2003, Matthew
received first place at the World Conducting Symposium on the Orchestral Music
of Sibelius and has since been invited back as a
regular guest conductor by the host orchestra – the Simfonică a Filarmonicii Braşov.
In
Australia, as part of Symphony Australia’s conductor program, Matthew has
conducted the Sydney, Melbourne, Queensland, Adelaide and Tasmanian Symphony
Orchestras and holds regular guest conductor positions with the Australia Pro
Arte Chamber Orchestra, the Sydney Youth Orchestra, Australia’s “premiere new
music ensemble” Halcyon and the East Sydney Chamber Orchestra. He is also in
demand as a conducting teacher, principally as lecturer of orchestral
conducting at the University of New South Wales.
