WREXHAM SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Matthew Wood – Conductor

In recent years, the Australian conductor Matthew Wood has emerged as a musician of versatile talents within orchestral, choral, operatic and new music repertoire.

Currently residing in Manchester, Matthew was recently awarded the much sought after position of Junior Fellow in Conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music. This two-year position commenced in September 2005 and will see Matthew direct the RNCM Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, the RNCM Opera and RNCM New Ensemble. During this time, Matthew will also work closely with Maestro Mark Elder CBE and the Hallé orchestra.

Since his arrival in the UK, Matthew has worked with many ensembles including the Hallé Youth Orchestra, Stockport Symphony, Crosby Symphony, Chester Philharmonic, Wilmslow Symphony and numerous ensembles at the RNCM.

Matthew has been awarded numerous conducting prizes and awards both in Australia and overseas. In 2003, Matthew received first place at the World Conducting Symposium on the Orchestral Music of Sibelius and has since been invited back as a regular guest conductor by the host orchestra – the Simfonică a Filarmonicii Braşov.

In Australia, as part of Symphony Australia’s conductor program, Matthew has conducted the Sydney, Melbourne, Queensland, Adelaide and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras and holds regular guest conductor positions with the Australia Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, the Sydney Youth Orchestra, Australia’s “premiere new music ensemble” Halcyon and the East Sydney Chamber Orchestra. He is also in demand as a conducting teacher, principally as lecturer of orchestral conducting at the University of New South Wales.
