Phillip Boyden – violin soloist

 

Phillip was born in Newport, Gwent in January 1972.Having moved to Llanrhystud, West Wales at the age of 4, he took up the violin and studied under Wynford Jones until he moved back to South Wales.

 

He played in the Gwent Youth Orchestra from the age of 9, and was leader for the last 5 years of service. Phillip also played for the National Youth Orchestra of Wales from the age of 13, and was leader of this Orchestra for 3 years.

 

Phillip studied at Chetham’s School of Music, before moving to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he learnt the violin with Detlef Hahn. While at the Guildhall, Phillip had the opportunity to lead their Symphony Orchestra, and also the Chamber Orchestra when it went on tour to Belgium.

 

While studying in London, Phillip lead the Young Musician’s Symphony Orchestra, and also the London Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. He has played the solos to Scheherezade, and Danse Macabre in the Royal Festival Hall, and the Barbican respectively.

 

Phillip eventually had to leave the Guildhall early in order to undertake work in Malaysia and Crete with the Steve Martland Band, an ensemble he worked for until moving down to Bournemouth, where he is now Sub-Principal Second Violin with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

 

Since starting as a professional musician, Phillip has worked with many different orchestras, including English Chamber Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonia of Galicia in Northern Spain.

 

As a soloist, Phillip has played many recitals, and has performed the Kabalevsky, Mendelssohn and Bruch Concertos with the Gwent Youth Orchestra. The Mendelssohn was performed in St. David’s Hall, Cardiff. Down in Bournemouth, Phillip is now trying to restart the Hill String Quartet in which he plays 1st violin.
