Robin Newton - Conductor

 

Robin studied music at Cambridge University and went on to study postgraduate conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester. He has studied with Mark Elder, David Parry and Mark Shanahan. In his second year Robin was invited to assist Michael Rosewell at Clonter Opera. He twice won the Ricordi Prize for Opera and is a Peter Moores Scholar.

 

Immediately on leaving the RNCM Robin was engaged as assistant conductor by Opera Rara for whom he has worked regularly, conducting the LPO, Philharmonia and Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields as well as working with singers including Bruce Ford, Jenny Larmore, Annik Massis and Nelly Miricioiu.

 

 

Robin has also regularly assisted at at Garsington Opera where his work includes Rossini’s L’equivoco stravagante and Le comte Ory.

 

Robin has recently been engaged as Music Director of Threestone Opera for whom he conducted The Marriage of Figaro this January in a production that will be taken to the Bloomsbury Theatre later on this year. Future plans include Jenufa and Fidelio. He also holds the position of Music Director of Preston Opera with whom he has performed Nabucco, Cavalleria Rusticana and Dido and Aeneas. This year he will conduct The Bartered Bride and an opera gala with Amanda Roocroft.

 

Robin began a relationship with ViVA: the Orchestra of the East Midlands last year, conducting a programme of Beethoven and Sibelius with the violinist So-Ock Kim.
