The Wrexham County Wind
Band was formed in 1993 and quickly established a reputation for the quality of
its performances. Its members are drawn from all the senior schools in Wrexham
and range in age from eleven to eighteen.
Highlights have included
nine invitations to the Music for Youth finals at the Royal Festival Hall,
London, where they have been awarded two Outstanding and three Highly Commended
awards. The Band as also had the honour of performing at the Symphony Hall,
Birmingham and playing for the opening of the School Proms at St. David’s Hall,
Cardiff in 1999, in front of sell-out audience of 2,500 cheering people.
In 1998, the band
undertook a successful tour to Poland, which included a thirty-six hour coach
trip! A tour to Austria followed two years later and the band is off to the
Black Forest next July. As you can see each tour is getting gradually nearer to
home - in ten years time the band intends a tour to Gresford!!!!
In the past few years, to
instil closer relations with local groups, the County band has performed a
series of joint concerts with Llay, Rhos, Point of Ayr, Porthawyn and both
Powys and Shropshire County Bands, and are delighted to add The Wrexham
Symphony Orchestra to that growing list.
