WREXHAM SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Yoohong Lee – Cello

Cellist Yoohong Lee, still 24 years of age, has long been establishing an international solo career, debuting with his native Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra in Korea at the age of 10, and making his London solo debut at the Royal Festival Hall only two years later.

Having studied with Maurice Gendron at a very early age, Yoohong then went on to the Yehudi Menuhin School and later the Royal College of Music, London (where he was appointed a HRH Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mother's Scholar), under the tutelage of Steven Doane and Late William Pleeth. Yoohong is currently completing his studies under Ralph Kirshbaum at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester.

Over the years, Yoohong has worked with many of the world's orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia, Bayerische Kammerphilharmonie, and KBS Symphony Orchestra; and has appeared in numerous festivals across Europe, including the Casals Festival in Kronberg, Rencontres Musicales d'Evian, Gstaad and Colmar Festivals. He has also given concerts in Rome, Paris, Berlin, Lisbon, Hong-Kong and Singapore.

Most notable recent occasions include his American debut at the Davies Hall, San Francisco (1995), where he was invited to work with the RPO and the late Lord Menuhin, in celebration of the UN's fiftieth anniversary; and a performance of Elgar's concerto with the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall (1997), for which he was acclaimed for his "shining tone.... and light fingered fluency"(Evening Standard).

In 1999, Yoohong performed with conductor Dmitri Kitaenko and KBS Symphony Orchestra in the presence of HM Queen, in a live TV and radio broadcast gala concert commemorating HM's state visit to Korea. Further broadcast has included a performance on BBC Radio 3 and an appearance with Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, which was televised nationally in Germany by ZDF.

Further afield, Yoohong has worked with actor Corin Redgrave in a stage realisation of Oscar Wilde's De Profundis at the National Theatre, London and Repertory Theatre, Birmingham, performing specially commissioned music by composer Jonathan Goldstein.

In 2001, Yoohong has already performed in Austria, England, Portugal, Hong-Kong and Korea, and will be touring Spain with the Czech Virtuosi in the forthcoming season.

Yoohong's recording of the Elgar Concerto with the RPO and late Lord Menuhin is released on Tring International/Royal Philharmonic Collection, and he is currently working on a new disc of Bach's solo suites for KBS/Universal, to be released early next year.
